About your trip

EACH NIGHT YOU STAY = ONE WEEK OF SCHOOL FOR A CHILD IN NEED!

If you’re a family member of an addict/alcoholic, seeking support for a loved one in or out of active addiction, ready to rediscover yourself, set boundaries, and embrace peace, join us for a transformative travel retreat. Experience a journey of healing, cultural immersion, and supportive community, and return home feeling recharged, connected, and ready to reclaim your life.

IMAGINE THIS....

You arrive carrying more than a suitcase. You’re exhausted — from trying to help someone you love who’s struggling with addiction, from reacting to crises, from searching for answers that never quite land. You’re here because you need clarity now — not another slow, fragmented process.

From the very first conversations, you realize you don’t have to explain yourself. Others here understand the fear, guilt, anger, and hope that come with loving someone who’s addicted. Guided by an experienced family addiction specialist, you begin to understand what addiction truly is — and just as importantly, what it isn’t. The self-blame starts to ease.

This kind of work rarely happens at home.

At home, life interrupts. Roles pull you back in. Even good support gets diluted. Here, distance creates the pause your nervous system needs to settle. The learning becomes immersive and concentrated, unfolding across days instead of months — through guided sessions, shared meals, and real-time reflection that allows insight to stick.

And then you notice where you are.

You’re in Antigua Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, far removed from the patterns and pressures of everyday life. Cobblestone streets, quiet courtyards, and mountain air offer a sense of perspective you can’t access at home. The unfamiliar surroundings help you see your family situation more clearly — less reactive, more grounded.

As the week unfolds, you feel steadier. Not because everything is fixed, but because you are clearer. You understand where your responsibility ends and where your loved one’s begins. And that clarity brings real relief.

You don’t come here to escape your life.

You come to step out of it briefly — so you can return home stronger, clearer, and better equipped to love without losing yourself.

Al Updike M.A., LADC

Hi, I’m Al, and I’m honored to join you on this journey. Originally from Sonora, Mexico, I moved to the U.S. at 10 years old, navigating the challenges of a new culture, language, and identity. As a member of the LGBTQ community, I often felt caught between worlds, searching for belonging. For years, I turned to drugs and alcohol to cope, but my recovery journey helped me discover my true self and ignited my passion for helping others heal.

Over the past 14 years, I’ve served as the Director of Outpatient Programs at Hazelden Betty Ford, where I developed innovative treatment models, including the One Counselor Model of Intensive Outpatient Care. I’m especially proud to have launched the Spanish Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program to support the LatinX community and championed PRIDE Festival events to create inclusive recovery spaces for LGBTQ individuals. My work has always been about breaking down barriers to recovery and ensuring that everyone has access to the tools they need to thrive.

I earned my Master’s degree from the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School in 2009, following studies in Spanish and Psychology at Carleton College. Before entering the recovery field, I was a chef and business owner, where I learned the value of creativity, connection, and resilience.

I now live in St. Louis Park, MN, with my partner, James, of 22 years. When I’m not working, I love experimenting in the kitchen, playing tennis and pickleball, traveling, and enjoying the theater. I’m here to share my personal and professional journey, helping you discover the freedom, joy, and connection that recovery makes possible.

"Al Updike is a rock of empathy and compassion. His ability to connect fostered a sense of community and support I needed."

Our Client Reviews

Al Updike is a wonderful therapist.  He understands how important it is to meet people where they are on their journey.  His own strong recovery gives him insight, empathy, and compassion to lead clients to a new level of discovery.  In the 5 years I've had the pleasure to know Al, I have seen him, more than one time, go out of his way to help someone move to recovery. Al Updike served as the first manager of our sober house in Minneapolis, Sober Living in Minnesota LLC.  He laid the groundwork for our sober house and served as a mentor to our next house managers.  Without Al, we would not have made it successfully for 10 years helping young men and LGBT residents on their recovery journey.

Al Updike always brings the joy! I’ve worked with him in several capacities over the past 15 years; he’s authentic to the core, lives and breathes 12 Step recovery, and makes me laugh like few others. I’ve seen him present to large crowds, share his experience with small groups of friends, and no matter the venue he’s professional, sincere, and driven by the desire to help people. Cannot recommend his mentorship enough!

& DEPARTURE NOTES

Is Guatemala safe for travelers?

Yes! The retreat is located in Antigua, a secure and tourist-friendly 16th Century Spanish colonial town known for its beauty and welcoming atmosphere. Our beautiful villa is situated in a safe, gated neighborhood, providing peace of mind during your stay. We also prioritize your safety with carefully vetted accommodations, professional guides, and planned itineraries to ensure a worry-free experience.

How can I stay sober in a new environment?

This retreat is designed for individuals with a solid foundation in sobriety, whether you have several months or many years in recovery. It’s less about staying sober and more about rediscovering joy, adventure, and purpose in a supportive, drug- and alcohol-free environment. That said, for those who might feel uncertain, you’ll find daily recovery-focused sessions, a community of like-minded individuals, and a safe space that inspires personal growth and connection. The retreat offers an enriching experience for anyone looking to deepen their recovery or reignite their sense of adventure.

Is the retreat worth the cost?
Absolutely. The retreat combines personal growth, adventure, and community in a transformative experience. Plus, your stay supports local education and sobriety initiatives, creating a meaningful impact beyond your own journey.

How does my stay benefit the local community?
Your stay directly supports two impactful initiatives:

  • Education: For every night you spend in a room, we donate one week of schooling to a local Mayan child, helping to provide access to much-needed education.
  • Sobriety: Your participation also contributes to projects aimed at helping locals achieve and maintain sobriety, offering resources and support to transform lives.

What happens if I don’t fit in with the group?
Our community is inclusive, welcoming, and supportive. Many participants feel nervous initially but leave with deep connections and lifelong friendships.

What if I need to cancel or change my plans?
We understand life happens. Flexible cancellation and rescheduling options are available. Contact us for specific details, and we’ll work with you to find a solution.

Will my privacy be respected?
Absolutely. Your recovery journey is private, and we have a strict confidentiality policy to ensure your details are protected.

Can I bring a partner or friend who isn’t in recovery?
Yes, partners and supportive friends are welcome, but they must also commit to remaining drug- and alcohol-free throughout the retreat and choose to join in on the adventure!

What happens if someone relapses during the retreat?
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants, anyone who relapses into drug or alcohol use will be asked to return home.

Do I need to book my own flights?
You’re welcome to book your own flights, but we partner with an IATA-certified travel agency to assist with bookings, cancellations, and rescheduling—all at no extra cost.

What’s the difference between single and double rooms?
A single room offers complete privacy, ideal for those who prefer solitude, while a double room is shared with a same-gender participant. Single rooms incur a $500 USD supplement. All rooms have private ensuite bathrooms.
